Now, our teachers have to be so "PC" in regards to these kids.some of the stories my mom tells me about her school are sickening. When I was in school, if a kid was caught with drugs.they were out of the system. I think our schools (not just Madison, ALL OVER) have become way too tolerant of kid's behaviors. Somebody will always be unhappy with their school enrolling the troubled kids(the correct zoning and all), and usually these sentiments come to the surface in times of grief and hindsight. What is the system doing with their "Patriot-style" HS population? Expelling altogether? OR releasing them into the only HS in Madison? What about HS? That is a troubled age as well, but hey, there has been only one HS for 10 yrs now. I am glad I found that now before purchasing in Madison, but again, I'm not sure that "policy" would be a deterrent to enroll at DMS. the policy of releasing the "troubled element" into DMS regardless of residence (if that exists, and this case wasn't a "pull the strings, bend over rules" to pass the hot potato to another school as it was circulated in the community). Had he return to LMS after his "rehab" and shot a child there (remember, he wasn't selling drugs to "innocent angels", so he had an audience there too), would've you felt better about it? (TG it wasn't "my school")ģ. Had the shooter been attending DMS all along (lived in DMS district), and been released into the DMS general population after his stint in Patriot, what would you have said then? "remove the bad seed from school system please?"Ģ. Not wanting to get into an argument with you:ġ. We need a seperate alternative school in a seperate building at a seperate location. That's something I don't know.does anyone know HOW isolated the Patriot Academy is from the general school population?Ĭonfused.I know two parents who have your same concern, and are going to voice it loudly to the school board. Did his "Doctor" parents plead with Liberty Middle not to expel him from school. AND then LESS then 45 days after attending Discovery Middle School he walks up behind a student and cowardly shoots him in the back of the head in cold blood.Īlso, if he was caught distributing drugs in school why wasn't he expelled. After a couple months attending this "Alternative" School some "wise" School Administrator then determines its time for him to reenter a normal school environment so they decide to transition this "problem" child to a normal school NOT in his school district (Liberty Middle). As a result, this student is placed in the Madison City Alternative School (Patriot Academey) to isolate him from normal, law abiding students. We have a student that was identified as a behaviorial problem associated with gang activities. My issue is with the School Administration. The schools can only do so much for our kids.we as parents need to start the discussions at home. So, what we (community) need to address here is the motive (youth mind, psychological ramifications) - not the location. So, in that regard, a metal detector is peace of mind for parents (that their kid won't be killed at school), but if they hang out with the wrong crowd and you, as a parent failed to keep tabs on your child, then I'm sorry to break it to you, but your child could be killed anywhere but the school. The "school " discussion makes sense only if the crime wasn't premeditated and he just snapped at 2P that day, but then again, had he been carrying that gun around every day, to have it handy at that moment? Then yeah, a metal detector is a deterrent.īut for planned, calculated, intended killings, metal detectors won't do squat, except for that crime not happening on school premises, but the killer could take his "business" elsewhere. Whether gang affiliation, bullying response, or any other motive the shooter may have had, having metal detectors in the school, or 20 security guards on the premises, would've stopped the troubled young man from executing his plan if that was what he intended to do? Had the boy shot the victim away from school, would people been so up in arms with "take back our schools" movement? Sure, the shooting inside the school made it more atrocious because so many kids were at risk (ricochet, or the shooter got into a frenzy and couldn't stop at one), but gang/drug-related killings have happened outside the school before (albeit older teenagers/young adults), and nobody gave a hoot (not to the extent that DMS is discussed). When people set their mind to kill, they can do it IN the school or just as well OUTSIDE the school and anywhere else (parking lot, mall, playground, ballpark, club/outside the club, work place, neighborhood, drive-bys, where ever they hang out).
